Black Sails was my first introduction to real, hard-core punkmusic, and I must say, it sure as ... converted me into a die-hard AFI fan. This is one of those CDs that almost anyone will love. My mom described it as "catchy", after listening to it all the way through, my friends who normally listen to Britney Spears said it was "pretty cool, I might start listening to this stuff now", and my friends who were already either punk or AFI fans just said "WOW--This is their best yet." For those of you who enjoy the nonconformities of AFIs music, don't worry, they haven't gone mainstream yet-that is what their new single "Days of the Phoenix" is for. If you give them a chance and also listen to Davey Havok's awesome, insightful and almost frighteningly dark lyrics, you will have an even greater understanding of what an awesome CD Black Sails is. If this is your first AFI CD and you listen to it and don't like the way some of it sounds, just keep going. I promise that you will find something that you like, and if you listen to it again (It only took one play for me to love the entire thing) I can guaruntee that you will want to play this CD over and over again. Black Sails hasn't left my CD player since I bought the CD. Also note that if you get this and get freaked out by the first track, just keep going... One can only understand their chanting of "Through our bleeding we are one" if at one of their sweet concerts. The most popular songs are usually "Prayer Position", "At A Glance", and "God Called In Sick Today"--Keep listening to this, after about 8 minutes there is a hidden track that is really tight. All of these have very deep lyrics that I encourage you to read. I personally also love "Strength Through Wounding", "Malleus Maleficarum", "The Last Kiss" and "Porphyria"... It was literally impossible for me to pick these out, as I absolutely cannot say enough about every single song on this CD. If you want more AFI my number one recommendation would be to get their "All Hallows EP" with "Total Immoral" on it. The other songs on it are also sweet but "Total Immoral" is one of the best songs ever written. You may have heard The Offspring's whiny version of it-this is actually an AFI song. If you are looking for a more main-stream AFI song listen to "Days of the Phoenix". The rest of that album though, "The Art Of Drowning", is actually darker and more hard core than Black Sails. BUY BLACK SAILS IN THE SUNSET!!!!!
