As most who have reviewed this album will agree, AFI are a great band. Not many others can improve so greatly with each album single release like AFI can. Every album is a huge improvement over the previous one, and in pretty much every instance, the previous album was still great. Black Sails in the Sunset is no exception.
After showing promise with the very impressive but all to short All Hallows EP, they released this gem, which gained them many of the fans that make up their almost cult-like following known as the Despair Faction. This is much more melodic than the releases prior to it (excluding the All Hallows EP), while it stil manages to maintain their roots in the hardcore punk department.
Davey Havok's unique one-part hardcore barking and other part melodic high pitched singing voice is certainly very different and definatly something to behold. AFI definatly isn't a one man show though, The instruments are way tighter than your average punk band. Lead guitarist Jade Pudget's clever use of chords backed by a very sturdy rythm section consisting of drummer Adam Carson and bassist Hunter make the music flow perfectly with Davey's powerful voice and lyrics.
So in conclusion, if a unique record that can pack a punch but still has melody aplenty sounds appealing to you, get this album!
