I wouldn't say it's the best AFI album...

...in fact it may be the "least best" (I don't want to say worst). Yeah, the music does tend to be rather 'similar', but for me it was worth it just for the photos of the band looking about 15, and the pretty damn cool cover art, which was actually drawn by their bassist.
OK, i'm going to go slightly "off target" here. The bassist on this album, Geoff Kresge, is truly a god among men. His playing on this record is exceptional, plus he wrote most of the music. The guitar playing and drumming is standard-to-good but the bass is great (well I like it anyway, I'm not expert). Kresge went on to play bass in Tiger Army (another great band) and generally kick ass. Unfortunately he has recently left Tiger Army and I'm not sure what he's doing now. I can only hope that he's doing a solo album... man that would rule.
Anyhow back to the topic. There isn't really any surprising innovation here but some of the songs are pretty good. "Take the Test", "This Secret Ninja", "File 13" and "Cult Status" are probably my favourites.
Don't buy this expecting an amazing album, just a fun album, and you won't be disappointed.
