A-ha

Scoundrel Days

BEAUTIFUL MELANCHOLY, INTENSE FEELING IN EURO-POP

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
a-ha goes to prove that European (and in this case Scandinavian) popular music can indeed have a soul -- a deeply feeling soul full of longing -- and this soul does not rely on ballads for expression. The melodic anguish of "Scoundrel Days", "I've Been Losing You", and "The Weight of the Wind" is beautifully and distinctively expressed in songs that really move. You could dance, while the poetic and surprisingly knowing lyrics give you pause (this despite the fact that, in other songs, the lyrics are not greatly comprehensible). Like so many good things, a-ha is underrated. But do yourself a favor and get the album!
