Rushed, but has a few big highlights...
Review Score:

(8/10)
Three and a half, maybe 4 stars.
I would not place this album at the same level as 13th Step or Mer De Noms, but that does not mean that I dislike it. I don't compare it to Tool due to the basic fact that they are not Tool, nor were they ever intended to be.
As many APC fans probably know, this album was rushed because the label was pushing the band to get a 3rd cd out ASAP, before Maynard returned to work on another Tool project. That, unfortunately, does shine through in many songs on the cd.
However, I do not regret purchasing Emotive.
I really admire that they put their thoughts out there, in the face of all the "anti-war = anti-American" BS.
They did an excellent job of putting their own spin on each of the songs. I don't necessarily like all of them, but I am a tough critic of cover songs and I prefer their harder stuff.
Honestly, I can't listen to "When the Levee Breaks". It is such a far cry from the original, which is probably my #1 favorite Zepplin song. The version on this cd is a bit limp. It is well done for the style that they recorded it, but it's just not a style that I like to listen to.
On the other hand, I love their take on "Imagine". For those of you that don't get it - it is MEANT to sound bleak. They are contrasting it with the original, which was a message of hope. This one is a message of desperation, which is basically the point of the album as a whole.
Watch the video, maybe you'll get it.
You've probably heard that song on the radio by now. If you didn't like it, don't bother with this cd.
"Passive" (their own original song) is fantastic, and I would easily say that it's my favorite on this cd. That song is what justifies my purchase.
I am torn when it comes to "Counting Bodies Like Sheep". This remix sounds good, but it frustrates me a bit because the original song ("Pet") is among my favorite APC songs. While the remix is fantastic in its own right, I greatly prefer the original on "13th Step".
The other songs on the cd are ok compared to other APC songs; I really don't have any strong feelings about any of them. They do feel a bit like filler, but are still good enough to carry the album.
While I would have preferred a whole new set of original songs, I did like the concept of the album. Yes, the cd IS depressing, but that was the point! As a whole, I was a bit disappointed because I can't help but compare it to their previous work. I really wish that they had spent more time and effort on it because it could have been amazing.
