these reviews that simply state this album sucks are ridiculous. whether a song nestles within your musical tastes or not, one can still judge if there exists a merit to it, something that warrants it respect. it's easily understandable the unappeal of this album to some, musically wise (i definitely have my favorites and least favorites based on that alone) but lets look at what a perfect circle has accomplished with emotive. i've always thought that a cover should not sound like the original, but should add new facets, make one consider it in a different light, a ressurection according to the vision of another creator, all while keeping the integrity of the first version. the band definitely achieves this with every song on the album. the soul classic, "what's going on" remains a poignant look at society, with a darker tone that seems more effective given the subject matter. one reviewer said his or her father disliked "imagine", funny considering my mother called that song, as well as marvin gaye's classic "beautiful." for me, the higlight of this album is "people are people." a huge depeche mode fan, it's amazing to hear a typical 80s synth track (so indicative of the era and the band's early career) redone in such a modernist manner. the message of the song can no longer be compromised by a style of music that many people never really appreciated or took seriously due to its production. unlike many depeche mode covers, this one shines for the simple fact that it barely resembles the original. simply marvellous. this band made me like "peace love and understanding," a song i give thumbs up for the lyrics, but have otherwise despised. emotive is an awesome (as in awe-inspiring) album that raises the standards for covers.
