But was such a remake necessary ? I don't think so for the following reasons: 1) Can we really "update" a song like A-Teens try to do ? I think that ABBA's music was a product of its own time and cannot really be adapted to please the new generation. ABBA is representative of the late-1970's, and no matter how much you modernize the beat of their songs, they are still going to sound nineteen-seventyish. To try to modernize ABBA's songs today is just as bad as, for example, attempting to film a remake of "Flashdance" today. ABBA is a product of the 1970's as much as "Flashdance" is a product of the 1980's. Changing the beat will not remove what critics of this music consider to be kitschy elements in the songs. In the end, what this blending of styles will lead to is that true ABBA fans will not like the modified songs (if they even care about this modern release), while dance music fans will probably not like the songs either (because they are not "dance" songs enough). 2) In recent years I have noticed renewed popularity for the disco style and for other late-1970's and early 1980's music, which means that if this trend continues, A-Teens are going to be out of date before ABBA.
In other words, go for the real thing, please ! This CD is a waste of money. If you like ABBA (as you are likely to do, otherwise you would not be reading this), you will be disappointed by this weak adaptation. And just tell yourself this: if ABBA had really wanted a dance music update of their songs, they would have recorded them themselves (that's what other singers, such as Engelbert Humperdinck, did; sometimes it's good, sometimes it's not, but at least it's by the same artists).
