I believe it's been stated many times by people(not critics), that the only reason that this album has gotten so much praise is because of Aaliyah's death(R.I.P.).You can say all you want, and it may take a few listens, but this album is a true show stopper. There might be a few weak(er) moments, but I can truly say there is no "filler".Even the songs which don't grab you, are all well done, well produced, with a credible amount of effort put in. The beats are absolutely to die for. They range from middle-eastern influenced, to latin, to trip hop esque, and more, while still remaining firmly planted in the r n'b realm. The ballads on this disc are amazing.Truly incredible.Smooth, slinky, twisted, dark. They range from quiet, late night blue-esy esque(I care 4 you)to minnie riperton esqe(Never no More)to the highlight (for me) on the entire disc "I Refuse".A gorgeous melody, and thumping, epic like beats and instrumentation.Everything about this record just falls into place. The up tempos are sexy, funky, and demonstarte Aaliyah's dry sense of humor. The lyrics may not be birlliant, and incredibly thought provoking, but they're not meant to be. They're very intelligent(particularly for r n'b).Aaliyah is absolute proof that you do not need to be blessed with a power house voice to bring something to your music. Her voice is soft, delicate, smooth like silk, and able to carry off emotions. She can sound sensual,longing,... off, or just like she's having a good time. The fact is, is that EVERYONE needs to own this album.Whatever type of music you like most, you can love this album, and I guarantee you that. This record is such a breath of fresh air, I mean these days it's so hard to find a GREAT r n'b disc. You either have cookie cutter trl made junk(Ashant)or over rated, over hyped artists like Alicia Keys, and India Arie.AALIYAH was a true epitome of great r n'b music, and artistry. We lost something truly great. She was such a big level above the street cred desperate mini divas. She was an original, on the verge of exploding. This is an amazing record.Dark, moody, pulsating, and melodically lush, and beautiful. She sang wonderfully, and she had something to say.Aaliyah had her identity. She's still alive, and I know that she knows how much she is missed and appreciated. She may not have written her music, but she is a pure example of a true artist. Her name is written all over this. And no amount of money, big name producers, or marketing can create that. She was born that way.R.I.P. baby girl.
