This is not your typical R&B. I'm not even a fan of R&B. This self-titled from Aaliyah, however, is truly a stand-out in the genre, deserving a category of its own.

Admittedly, I was only turned on to Aaliyah after all the press from her untimely death. The album soared on the charts, as crisis is known to motivate sales, but here the hype realistically reflects a superior work of art.

Slick, sexy, cool, Aaliyah lays out an ultra-modern take on R&B that should please listeners of any type of popular music. This CD is definitely ahead of its time, even years after its release.

While "More Than A Woman" and "I Care 4 U" are the commercial stand-outs (and they stand out for a good reason), the deeper cuts here are just a good. Check out "We Need A Resolution", "Loose Rap", "U Got Nerve", and "I Can Be" for an even sleeker side of Aaliyah.

Again, this is something that a fan of any genre of music may appreciate. Its one of very few of its kind in my collection, but it gets just as much play as those on the top of my list.
