Former Til Tuesday vocalist, Aimee Mann, released this 13-song pop album in 1996, three years before she finally received the recognition she deserved as a serious singer-songwriter with her MAGNOLIA soundtrack and the release of BACHELOR NO. 2 a year later. Even with its Beatle influences, I did not appreciate I'M WITH STUPID as much as Aimee's later cds until I heard her perform many of the songs from this cd during her recent concert here in Boulder. With their layered pop melodies and cutting lyrics, "Long Shot," "Sugarcoated," "You Could Make a Killing," Amateur," and "It's Not Safe" stand out not only on this cd, but also in concert. And then there's Aimee's perfect pop song, "That's Just What You Are," that she sings with Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford (of Squeeze) harmonizing on vocals. Although this may not be Aimee's strongest album, it nevertheless delivers a powerful pop experience.
