Call it what you will this is my favorite Til Tuesday album. I saw the
band play live many many times in Boston back in '84/'85 and I was always
in awe. The first time I saw them play at the now demolished Rat in
Kenmore Square, my friends and I knew we were seeing something special. I
watched the band and their song list grow as well as their popularity and
the crowds of people that began showing up especially after the release of
the album.
Before the first album I only knew the live shows. Most people who only
knew them from the single on the radio unfortunately never heard the edgy
fullness and vitality of their live sound. The album by contrast was very
produced with a very clean cathedral reverb type sound. In fact there were
many songs in their repitiore that never made it to the second or any
other album which is a shame because they were damn good! If you can get a
copy of their video retrospective the last song gives a little taste of the live show.
I could tell from seeing and listening to them that Robert Holmes was a
great guitar player. After Til Tuesday he formed his own band called Ultra
Blue and it was here that he really cut loose and showed his chops.
Honestly the guy is one of the best (and most under-rated) guitarists I've
ever seen. Aimee Mann of course was a sight and sound to behold and we all
know she's done very well for herself since. I've been trying to get some
of the photos I took from back then onto tiltuesday.net .
In any event this work remains, and for me it is still a great pleasure to
listen to. While this album is rooted in the 1980's from whence it came and
you can hear that, it was one of the best efforts from that time, and I
believe its also become a timeless classic for any time.
