Instead, this album can be described as being their "Led Zeppelin III".
Back when Led Zeppelin wowed the world with their authoritative album "Led Zeppelin II", they decided to follow it up with "Led Zeppelin III", their search for growth and technique, and... baffled just about everybody. That album drew negative reviews, and it sold fewer copies than the two previous albums. But now it's considered a masterpiece in retrospect, for after years and years and finally being able to look at the entire catalog as a whole, you can see in which direction "III" was leading to.
The same thing goes for Air's "Legend" as well. "Moon Safari", their gorgeous and delightful first album, showed Air as the master of their creative powers and strong points. This one, on the other hand, is the work of artists searching for NEW creativer powers and strong points to add to their paintbox, and I'm positive that it's one to baffle and confuse most of their followers (and the press) in the process.
Sort of a mutant hybrid mix between "Safari" and their music for "The Virgin Suicides" with new experiments mixed in with a let's-see-what-this-does style, it simply cannot be compared to the other pieces. No wonder Air have been called the Paris Beatles! They share The Beatles' willingness to sacrifice anything already mastered to learn something else, and I can't want to see how this affects their material in the future.
If you want the traditional Air sound, go with "Safari" or their singles collection. This one is for the more hearty avant-garde listening taste... or true Air admirers who are proud of the guys for surprisingly everybody. Something that all-too-few acts out there in the music business do THESE days!
