The Vocals Hurt

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (6/10)
Although I normally don't get into this branch of electronica (sticking mostly to IDM), this duo is pretty good when their music isn't spoiled by singing. Electronic music can be good with vocals (some Massive Attack stuff, Portishead) but the vocals have to be done right. And they're done totally wrong on "Moon Safari."

"Femme d'Argent" is good, ... "Sexy Boy" is good as well. It has some vocals, but they're so warped with effects that they add to the music.

So after two good songs I was expecting a good album. But then came "All I Need," with its unbearable singing. Of the next four songs, I would only rate "Talisman" as good. "You Make It Easy" has the same bad voice that was on "All I Need," while "Kelly Watch The Stars" and "Remember" are ruined by that corny techno computer voice that's everywhere in bad music, from that "Blue da boo di da boo da song" to Daft Punk.

The last three songs aren't bad at all, but they weren't Autechre either. All in all, this album would have deserved 4 stars had it not been for the bad songs in the middle.

To tell the truth, I left this album with a pretty low opinion of Air. It only took about the first 5 seconds of the movie "The Virgin Suicides" to totally change my mind. Don't buy "Moon Safari." All the reviews out their may make it sound like their best, but if you're looking for thoughtful, slow, relaxing music, their score for the aforementioned film is by far the better choice.

All I need.

I have to admit I was drawn in by "Sexy Boy", then found out that the rest was just as good, but mellower, smoother. I love the opening trac [ ... read complete review ]
