When you think of the French, your first thought is of rude, smelly people who find Jerry Lewis funny for reasons unknown to anyone but themselves. You most definitely do not think of musical prowess, yet Air has put a change to that way of thinking. After first impressing with Premieres Symptomes, they dazzle with much of Moon Safari. The first single, "Sexy Boy," is the high point of the album, and afforded Air some cool cachet once it was remixed by indie icon Beck. The track is extremely catchy, "Air-y" even, with its buoyant keyboards and indecipherable French lyrics. "La Femme D'Argent" has an excellent opening bassline and a cool '70's soundtrack vibe to it. It's easy to see why Moon Safari impressed enough to land Air the gig of composing the soundtrack and score to Sofia Coppola's '70's period piece The Virgin Suicides. "All I Need" and "You Make It Easy" are reminiscent of Portishead and of Beth Orton's work with the Chemical Brothers, and they set the mood for much of the album. While "Remember" may be the only misstep (and unfortunately it foreshadows their later work), many of the other tracks, including "Talisman" and "New Star In the Sky," have an understated, sublime feel, proving Air to be a force and making Moon Safari the perfect late night chill-out album.
