Moon Safari

Easy

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
Whilst this initially appeared to be surfing the wave of ultra-arch 'loungecore' acts that were trendy in the UK for five minutes in 1998, 'Moon Safari' is much better than that. Far from being an ironic throw-away joke, it's a set of gorgeous semi-ambient musical floatathons, an amalgam of all kinds of easy-listening, electronic mood music styles from the 1970s, with diversions into light jazz ('You make it easy' and 'All I need' in particular). It's happy and sad at the same time - the tunes are usually mellow without being poppy - and is to blame for the revived interest in vocoding, leading to a rash of techno / hip-hop tracks that overuse this effect without mercy. Elsewhere there are tinny strings machines and Light Programme orchestration, but it all works without sounding calculated and cold. Think of St Etienne's better moments, crossed with Tony Bennett, and you're only a little bit of the way there.
