Gaudacious!

Okay, no such word, but sometimes it's hard to think of a catchy title! "Gaudi" is an interesting Alan Parsons collection. It wasn't as successful as some of his earlier releases, and it didn't really produce a hit single. Only "Standing on Higher Ground" received any type of airplay, and it's not one of his best tunes, although certainly beats most of what plagues our airwaves these days! (Am I sounding like my parents?). The lengthy "La Sagrada Familia" is typical Alan Parsons extravagance, but is beautiful and quite good. Lead vocalist John Miles does a great job with the vocals, and the tongue-twisting title is actually a very lyrical phrase. As always, Mr. Parsons' arrangement (along with Eric Woolfson) is impeccable. My favorite song is "Too Late." Lenny Zakatek (who also sang an early hit, "Damned If I Do") does this great "pop" sounding tune. It reminds me of early Paul Carrack and Ace, but it has a sound all its own. It has a great hook, too. Don't know why Arista didn't push this as a single. It would have done fairly well, I think. "Closer to Heaven" is a signature mushy Parsons ballad, but it lacks the beauty of "Old and Wise" and "Time." John Miles returns for a sarcastic take on "Money Talks." Overall, a good Parsons collection and worth the investment.
