Alice Cooper

Brutal Planet

Knock me over with a feather...

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (8/10)
I reluctantly purchased this disc (based on word of mouth) and was stunned. First the bad news, every song is in the standard metal drop "D" tuning made popular by every single 80's metal band. The guitar work is predictable, solid but predictable. The production is thick, very thick and that's cool but not for eleven songs in a row. Now the good news, it's got hooks everywhere and the vocal attack is stunning. Alice sounds like the most evil twisted psycho with a mic since....he, himself in the early 70's. Like most solid albums it does require several listens to get the hooks fully "sunk in" but they do sink in and you will have a hard time getting the CD out of your car, I can't find the strength to remove it yet, Alice has got me in a trance. The bottom line: 5 of the songs are "A+" material and the trick is (and he's smart for doing this) 4 of them are in a row at the end of the CD. A rewarding discovery, you may want to try it (in spite of oneself) override your urge at the record store to put it back on the shelf.
