While it is a solid debut, Facelift is not as engaging as Dirt. Alice plays solid, album metal cuts here. However, there are some memorable moments. The Layne Staley-penned "Man In The Box," which is one of AIC's greatest songs, and Jerry Cantrell's "Bleed The Freak." The most prominent feature of this album is a young guitarist named Jerry Cantrell, whose arena-sized guitar punch owes much to Led Zeppelin, Sabbath, and others. There is less about drugs and gloom on this album, except for the closing track, the Staley-penned "Real Thing," which chronicles (in a somewhat humorous/pathetic way) the life story of a heroin addict (Staley.)
