"Jar of Flies" is an excellent, acoustic-based, 7-song set that was released between the monumental "Dirt" LP, and Alice's swan song, "Alice in Chains". Make no mistake, despite the stripped down sound, "Jar of Flies" packs quite a punch in terms of emotion and substance. If you don't own this EP, you owe it to yourself to add "Jar of Flies" to your collection post haste! My personal favorites, "I Stay Away" and "Don't Follow" are worth the price alone. "I Stay Away" is certainly one of Alice's all-time best feauturing the vocal magic of the late (great) Layne Staley, backed by a string quartet. "Don't Follow" is an interesting folkish-ballad that begins with Jerry Cantrell on lead vocals over a sparse acoustic guitar, and climaxes with Staley on vocals during a powerful conclusion that features full-band accompaniment. This EP showcases a band at their prime. Had Alice not been de-railed by the drug addiction of Layne Staley and continued releasing high-quality material such as this EP, "Dirt", and "Facelift", we may be talking about a legacy band on par with the likes of Led Zeppelin.
