During their career, Alice In Chains couldn't ever put out a bad record. The same can't be said for too many bands, especially lately. "Jar Of Flies" is another masterpiece of theirs that I've been digging on for a while. Following in the loud LP/quiet EP pattern established by the Facelieft/Sap album span, this 7-song EP isn't quite as rustic sounding as Sap, but it is mostly acoustic, and more ambient than most of their other work, and, oh yeah, this is where the strings come in! There is all the classic AIC trademarks here--Layne and Jerry do lots of harmonizing, and while Layne wrote most of the song lyrics on this one, Jerry gets his usual "big moment" with "No Excuses," probably one of his best ever compositions. Layne is in top shape here with his vocals and melodies, and one can hear on this album how well his deep, steely baritone vocals blend with an acoustic atmosphere. Cantrell's guitar work is also stellar here, and Mike Inez (ex-Ozzy Osbourne bassist) proves a worthy successor to Mike Starr. Inez co-wrote much of the music for this record and his influence is definitely felt here. High points include "I Stay Away," "Rotten Apple," "No Excuses," and the beautifully arranged Cantrell-penned instrumental "Whale & Wasp."
