Beck

Odelay

Another Low Point of the 90's

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (2/10)
Rock and Roll began as a fusion of musical styles and has a tradition of fusing new styles to one another for the past 50 years. However, there is such a thing as overkill and that is exactly what Beck does.
"Odelay" sounds like a child making a musical collage with his father's record collection. Even Beck's appearance is rather child like. Like a child, Beck succeeds in making a giant random, mess on this album.
If the point of the album was to be childlike, then he forgot the key element of what makes being a child fun, which is an endless well of energy. Beck's vocal style is typical of Indie Rock, monotone and lifeless. Coupled with the bizarre lyrics, there is nothing to grab onto to.
It seems the music is extremely eclectic to cross musical boundaries. If there was a reason to cross those boundaries to make something powerful or memorable that would be great, but he breaks the rules just to break them.
"Odelay" is basically the regurgitation of 30 years of pop culture. No matter how much you analyze a pile of vomit, it's still a pile of vomit.
