"Nevermind" showed us what the 90's were going to be, "Odelay" show us what we would have liked it to be (no offense, Kurt).
I almost wished Odelay had been released in 1999 to be a bookend to the decade, to show what musicians are going to be capable of in our current decade. Alas we have since sunk deep into the mighty forces of crapdom. I really hoped that Odelay would spark a strong transition from much of the fantastic stuff that was put out by the grunge movement, but it has since died.
Yes there is some great stuff that is being put out these days, but you have to depend on a leap of faith, since it's never played in rotation. I get depressed when I see a marginal artist like Kid Rock get lauded for hum-drum power chords, , teeny-boppers trying to act like 35 year-old porno stars, or Fred Durst springing up in front of any camera with the little red light lit up.
Odelay is what could have been. Think of the TRASH period between "the Joshua Tree" and Pearl Jam...(I just got a cold chill). Weezer....can your new album help me?
