The lyrics are downers

Beck's music is OK (though it is too self-consciously trying to be strange), but his lyrics are the pits. Of course, the lyrics are very abstract and many times seem to make no sense at all. That alone wouldn't bother me, but the words that Beck seems to randomly string together finally end up "coagulating" into a picture of depression, death, decay, social decadence, and so on. There are many references to death, garbage, rot, nooses, and other wonderful topics. Beck's state of mind seems to be terribly bleak (or maybe it's all just a con, an act. Either way, I don't like it).

This guy is the new Dylan? That's an insult to Bob.
