I'm a real big fan of the big band revival of the 60s and 70s when jazz became something other than popular dance music. I haven't been this excited about an album since I first heard the Grammy albums of Woody Herman in 1963. It is totally refreshing to hear these tunes with a new sound and new beat. I used to think I was a purist, only liking original arrangements and this CD changed my tune.
I especially liked Chicago, Dream a Little Dream and Take the "A" Train, but even more liked what they did to save that tired Moonlight Serenade. Then the combination of jazz, rock and latin on Sing Sing Sing with the Gypsy Kings was the tune that the whole family really liked. However there is nothing on the CD that I didn't like.
I admit that not everyone will like this album. Sometimes fusion doesn't work, and in attempt to make everyone happy, you make noone happy. However in my opinion, Chicago's Night & Day Big Band album is perfect. I'd like to hear a volume 2. Frankly, I'd have been very disappointed if they had made an attempt to play In the Mood or Caravan like the original version. There would have been no point to it. This is looking at old music through new eyes....or ears.
