im not too sure about four calendar cafe being "so-so" (as the last reviewer calls it), but yes.. this is a beautiful recording. in terms of this being a "true alternative" .. well .. the cocteaus have always provided a pleasant whisper in an industry that relies on accessible, overproduced claptrap. i will say, however that this is the cocteaus most "commercial" album to date. i miss the days of songs like "orange appled" which are catchy, yet maintain that cocteaus mystery; a phenomena most perfectly captured on 1986's "victorialand"; liz sings in the tongue native to her own imagination, and robin guthrie's melodies are shrouded in darkness. this is a nice introduction to the cocteaus, yet one should realize that previous releases contain an element of charm and mystery that the cocteaus are perhaps moving away from.
