Dave Matthews Band

Everyday

One Question, What Went Wrong?

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (4/10)
I rarely rate something this low, especially from the best band to ever walk the face of the earth, but this album is terrible. I can't find anything worth while on it. I consider myself to be a big fan of Dave Matthews, have all the official releases and dozens of bootleg concerts and everyone I enjoy. I first heard "I Did It" on a pre-internet-release and hated, but I thought that because there is one horrific song on it it doesn't mean the album is bad. I was obviously wrong. I can't begin to describe this, but I'll try.

The major thing this album is missing is a great jam or any sound coming from Leroi or Boyd, in my opinion they are the best part of the live performance, so I don't think this album would translate to concerts. Dave has said so many times, that this is a very unconventional band, and that they don't make music to make hits. The make music for the sake of enjoying music. SCREW THAT!!!!!! This album is nothing more than a chance to trade in the jam band sound that is loved so much for the MTV friendly sound. Full of short songs, no band effort, and absolutely no jams.

I Did It - Possibly the worst song in the entire Dave Catolog and that means it beats out my feelings towards The Christmas Song.

When The World Ends - One of the few good tracks on the album, sadly they were going to release a single on this but passed up after the 9/11 incident.

The Space Between - A pop song that reminds me anything on the Crash CD, which again is not one of my favorites. Most people have probably heard this on the radio, fan or not.

Dreams of Our Fathers - Actually not a bad tune, but not a good tune. I have mixed emotions on this, no way can I describe it. Check it out for yourself. Very good example of the use on the electric guitar on this album. This is a quick versed tune with an etchy mood, but a pop chorus.

So Right - A Pop melody with great intro, first minute sounds like it could be a great song, but that only hides, it's true face. Probably the only song where Leroi makes his prescence known. If you want to listen to this, put it on INTRO PLAY.

If I Had It All - Too Much Effort on lyrics to fall up short. Dave has not been known for his great lyrics, and this just expresses that. Not a good song at all.

What You Are - Starts off all techno, but then goes into a mood of it's own, sounds too much alike Halloween, but that's not a bad thing. I like this song.

Angel - Electric Guitar Intro but doesn't deliver anything else in the end. This sounds like another hard effort fallen short. Sounds like this was to be one of their pop MTV singles, but last minute change, because it actually sounds like something N'sync would sing. Terrible all around.

Fool To Think - Another song that sounds like Angel, but with a little more sound to it. A cool percussion sound in the background but nothing else is worth the time.

Sleep To Dream Her - By this time in the album you know what you're missing, and it's a great solo coming from Boyd, and sadly you don't hear it here. More keyboards than anything.

Mother Father - Sounds like a little Mexican tune, but actually not a bad tune. The only reason I like this is because it gives the album diversity.

Everyday - The only reason I like this song is because of the music video, the whole point of the song it to make somebody's day better, and the video delivers. I feel strange saying this, because I absolutely disagree with the idea of a music video, it's for nothing better to see teenage girls listening to a good song like this and then forget about it a month later. Once you make a music video it loses the novelty to the song.

That's the entire CD, and if you still don't believe that it could be so bad, then have a listen for yourself, and try and tell if you can tell the songs apart. It's all very slow, very pop melody. I was shocked after hearing this album that they canceled the Lillywhites, a great album, because it didn't have the Nancies sound. I laugh when I hear that because, it that was a concern, this album wouldn't have been written. Go ahead check that the review was not helpfull, if you haven't already, but you have to agree with me that this is not one the good Dave albums. I never usually write this long, but I need to stop the suffering now!
