Everywhere I go I see DMB fans putting this album down in every way they can. They let it play for all of about 20 seconds before passing it off as complete crap. Dave Matthews Band has washed up. Glen Ballard is Satan. We've lost Dave Matthews to the pop music world.
Well, I've been a DMB fan since their first album, and let me confess, when I had only listened to 20 seconds of Everyday I thought the same thing. And so, as I listened to the rest of the CD, I was in that mindset, and hardly gave it a second thought. And I stayed that way for quite some time I'm ashamed to say, hardly listening to Everyday at all, all depressed because I thought I'd lost my precious DMB forever. Then, at the release of their fifth CD, I realized they were still them, and a more happy me went back and listened to Everyday. And it was amazing. Absolutely amazing. If you look past the obvious, that yes, it is different, you realize that it is nowhere close to being teen pop. The lyrics are beautiful and touch on some very deep issues, and the music, although a little more restricted, still has that "naked honesty" that DMB is famous for. I think that people hear that electric guitar and see that all the songs cut off at 3 or 4 minutes, and they just throw it out without even giving it a chance. That's what I did. And I'll never forgive myself for it.
It's time to grow up, people, and accept that bands change, that they can't do the same thing, work with the same producer forever and remain satisfied. Not only would they get tired of what they were doing, but I can promise you, you would too. Change, as hard as it may be to accept, can be a very good thing. And in this case, it opened the door new producers, and to the monumental masterpiece that is Busted Stuff. Glen Ballard, you are God.
