Dave Matthews Band

Listener Supported

Their Second Best Live CD.

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
"Listener Supported" is a great CD. It has a great set list and awesome versions of "#41," "Two Step" "Warehouse" and "Watchtower." To be honest, the set list is better than "Red Rocks" but the intensity and the power of the performance is not as great as "Red Rocks." The songs, however, are fantastic.

Intro- (9 of 10)- Although a strong jam session, it seems like a filler track, but it is still fun to listen to because it shows you just how great and talented this band is.

Pantala Naga Pampa- (10 of 10)- This is one of my favorite Dave songs, even though its only thirty seconds long. It's fun to listen to and, in my opinion, is a great way to start off a live show. It has great opening lyrics.

Rapunzel (10 of 10)- The best version of this song out there. It towers over the "Live In Chicago" version by a mile. I love the segue from "Pantala" into this song.

Rhyme and Reason- (9 of 10)- I like the version on "Red Rocks" better. It is faster and darker, but this version is still really good. It has a lot of power and it maintains the intensity of the studio version.

The Stone- (10 of 10)- This is a great live version of a great song. The band plays so well on this song, and the lyrics, although strange, are fantastic. Dave has written a song that is truly worthy of being called great. The live version is truly stunning to listen to.

#41 (11 of 10)- This is the best live version of this song out there. The performance is great and the song is played beautifully. This is definitely a highlight of this CD. The song is so magical. It is one of the best Dave songs out there.

Crash into Me- (10 of 10)- This song is probably their biggest hit (although "Space Between" was their first #1 hit) because it is such a great song. The lyrics are wonderful. The live version is great, with extra lyrics life "I will be your Dixie chicken if you'll be my Tennessee lamb, we can walk together, down in Dixie land." I love this song.

Jimi Thing- (10 of 10)- this is another highlight of the CD. It is such a great song normally, but the live version is truly great. The band is talented, and the song is intoxicating.

#36- (8 of 10)- The version on "Red Rocks" has an awesome drum solo in the beginning (carter is awesome) but this version has no such thing. Actually, this version is somewhat weak. The lovely ladies take away so much from dave. Listen to the "Red Rocks Version.

Warehouse- (11 of 10)- This song has an awesome intro. Although the version on "Red Rocks" is more fast paced, it is hard to say it's better than this version. This is my favorite version, and it is easy to see why. The band displays their true talent to the fullest extent in this song.

Too Much- (9 of 10)- This is the weakest song on the CD, just because it is so similar to the studio version. Although this is one of my all time favorite Dave songs, it is somewhat disappointing live, but not that disappointing. It still rocks.

True Reflections- (10 of 10)- This is the most original song on the CD. It is sung by Boyd and the lovely ladies! Dave only supplies some background music. I love listening to this song.

Two Step- (11 of 10)- Like Warehouse and #41 this is another strong highlight of the CD. Nearing fifteen minutes long, it is a great song. The intro is fantastic with new lyrics, "this ship is troubled only cause this ship we're on is sinking." It has awesome musical talent, and Butch Taylor is awesome on the keyboard. (watch this performance on the DVD. Carter rules!)

Granny- (9 of 10)- This is a good song, but it could be better. i enjoy listening to it, though. Considering the other songs that are only on live CD's that are on this CD, this song is the weakest of those. It's still a great song to listen to.

Stay (Wasting Time)- (10 of 10)- This beats the version on "Live in Chicago" too. The "lovely ladies" provide some awesome background vocals missing on "Chicago." The band is wonderful, and this song is a blast to listen to.

#40- (10 of 10)- This song is just plain awesome. It has great lyrics, and is only about two minutes long. It is a great thing to throw into the CD. It's simple, it's fun, and it's got awesome lyrics, and in numerical order, it's an awesome precursor to "#41."

Long Black Veil- (10 of 10)- This song rings thick with country music overtones. It's about a small town murder mystery/love song. It is a good song with great lyrics and a lot of soul. The "lovely ladies" do a great job on this song, too.

Don't Drink the Water (10 of 10)- This is another awesome live version. I think I like the version on "Chicago," better, though. I can't determine. The band does a good job with this song. It's a good song.

Intro to...(10 of 10)- Stefan is a god. This is an awesome bass intro to a great song.

Watchtower (11 of 10)- Unlike "Red Rocks" and "Chicago" this version doesn't have Tim Reynolds and his awesome electric guitar. The band does it themselves, and they do a great job. Boyd tears it up on the violin, Leroi on the sax, Stefan on the bass, and Dave does a great job playing and singing. The song is wonderful. This version is truly magical to listen to.

"Before These Crowded Streets" is my favorite Dave album, and a lot of the songs on this live CD are from that album. This was the tour promoting "Streets" and so was "Chicago." "Red Rocks" was from "Crash" and "Under the table.." This album beats "Chicago" by a mile, and the only reason "Red Rocks" is better is the intensity in their performance.

3.5 Stars, actually...

Ok, let's be honest. There's an inevitable risk of overkill involved here, much like the Grateful Dead putting out two or three more Cds eve [ ... read complete review ]
