The Battle Rages on ...

Not that good? Are they listening to the same CD as me?

This is the HEAVIEST cd that DP has released since "Perfect Strangers". How can the other reviewers fail to even mention "Nasty Piece of Work" - Jon Lord's HEAVIEST Hammond organ work ever? I listen to this song to sike me up before I lift a heavy set in the gym! What about "Twist In the Tale"? This track sounds like it could have fit perfectly on "Perfect Strangers" for the way it is written, alas, a great HEAVY tune. Also, don't forget other notable heavies such as "Battle Rages On", "Ramshackle Man", and the cool Blackmore riffs of "Talk About Love". Of course the absolute highpoint is "Anya",a rather angelic piece that is a total team effort (the critics agree!), which certainly borders on greatness for composition as is definetly one of DP's finest efforts.

Why not five stars though? There are a few "boners" on this CD: "Time to Kill" sounds like the low-life tune "Call of the Wild" from the "House of Blue Light" CD. "Solitare" clearly sounds like a wanna-be industrial B-side. "One Man's Meat" is nothing more than Ian Gillian trying to come up with some innuendo.

Summary: If you like HEAVY and you like Deep Purple, this is a great album to listen. Lord, Blackmore, Glover and Paice are in fine form, and Gillian is definately in fine voice. A "really-really good" (but not "great") effort by the reigning Kings of hard rock.
