This album became one of the best sellers of all time, because it appealed to a wide audience with its cheerful tunefulness, relaxed feel, and basic guitar/vocal sound. To be sure, there are some good songs here, and they are performed professionally and produced with slickness. There are not, however, any great songs here, nor are there any audio or songwriting risks taken. Most of these songs have been played to death on the radio and their cumulative blandness eventually grates on my nerves. That which pleases everyone cannot necessarily please anyone greatly; this ain't the Beatles, with their astounding mix of innovation and accessibility; instead, it's just some pro guys with a pleasant country rock sound that happened to make it big. Good stuff, just not worth writing home about.
