It's obvious from this record and from the new live show (which I just saw last night) that "E" just wants to rock! Even many of the more melodic & acoustic songs from the past three records were turned into rockers last night. But you know what, it worked ! "E" reminds me of David Bowie in the way he has been able to successfully reinvent his sound and image over the years while still maintaining complete credibility. If your mostly a fan of the softer side of the Eels, the new record may be a little tough to digest at first although there are still some jewels in this area too such as "Woman Driving Man Sleeping", "Friendly Ghost" and "Fresh Feeling". The latter is one of the most radio friendly songs the band has ever put out. Of course it'll probably never hit the charts since commercial success seems to be an uncomfortable area for "E". Not surprisingly, they didn't even play "Novacaine for the Soul" at the show, Probably due to its "commercial success" label. All in all, I think this is their most consistent record to date. Not a bad song on it ! My only complaint is that the 4 additional songs on the included EP weren't just included on the the main CD. They're every bit as good and completely fit the flow an style of music on the main CD. I just hate filling up a slot in the CD changer for just 4 songs. But these songs are so good, I'm forced to make an exception. Something tells me that "E" knows this and derives a certain amount of twisted pleasure from it.
