Elliott Smith

From A Basement On The Hill

An Ending

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (8/10)
I can't say this is Elliot Smith's most enjoyable album but like all his music it's pure in emotion and soul. Whether one of his songs "works" or not you always know he is pouring his heart out into it which makes his music much more real and timeless than most other artists around.

From a basement on the hill is a dense and moody album for Smith making the lighter moments such as the career defining "A Fond Farewell" and the intimate "twilight" all the more affecting. The heavier songs such as the swirling "Coast to Coast" and "Shooting star" are pulled off just as beautifully. My favorite though is the haunting epic "King's crossing", which sounds like it should have been the last track on the album. I was hoping this album would suck as it might have made his departure easier to accept.
