Elliott Smith

From A Basement On The Hill

A Perfect Achievement

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
It's a little fitting that Smith's posthumous release is also the capstone on his career. To me, this album is heartwrenching, and on par with the definitive albums of Smith's tragic forebearers (Nick Drake's "Pink Moon" and Jeff Buckley's "Grace".) From the heavy "Coast to Coast" to the austere "Last Hour", this is Elliott Smith at his finest. I can easily call this the best release of the year, and possibly one of the best of the past ten years. The fact that this is likely the last collection of new material we'll hear from Elliiott only adds to the mood of the disc.

If you're a fan, this album is a no-brainer. If you enjoyed XO, Either/Or, Figure 8 or any other Smith release to any degree, you need this album. Buy two copies in case something happens to the first one.
