while not his best album by any means, one must remember that elliott was not present to consent to the final cut of this album. "from a basement on the hill" was originally intended to be a double album, so its anybody's guess what tracks elliott would've wanted to appear on this album.

that being said, this album is rather amazing, much like anything else elliott has done. the album is sonically diverse, yet retains the trademark elliott smith features: beautiful melodies sprinkled with emotional lyrics raw enough to bring tears to the eyes of even the coldest, cynical bastard. this album is a fitting end to elliott smith's legacy. a fond farewell to a friend indeed...elliott smith's music gave a voice to a plethora of feelings many of us are too afraid to mention, much less expose to the public, and for that we are forever grateful. thank you elliott, for having the strength to bear the sorrows we could not. you will be missed.
