Elvis Costello

King Of America

Costello's Best Album

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
Bored stupid by pop music and having problems with his regular backing band, the Attractions, Elvis Costello took the plunge and came up with King of America, which he would describe as 'the new old world.' It is indebted to great American songwriting, and wears its heart on its sleeve.

Suffused with barbed witticisms, 'She said she was the anchor for the ABC News/It was as much of the alphabet as she knew how to use,' he croons on Brilliant Mistake, it is undoubtedly the best Elvis Costello album.

It is an album that grows with every listen. The maturity of the songwriting is inspiring, the subject matter and musical stylings diverse, but it all holds together - like the U.S.A. I suppose ;D. Think of it as a journey through America by a Brit who loves Hank Williams.

Absolutely crucial to any sensible record collection!
