This is one of my favorite CD's. It has everything - great songs, singing, playing and production. The sound seems overly stark at first, but once you get used to it it becomes perfectly suited to the songs; in fact, it keeps the ballads from becoming overly sentimental. The songs themselves are great. One of the things I like about this CD is that it itroduced me to writers like Gillian Welch and Lucinda Williams. Daniel Lanois's songs are also a revelation, particularly "Black Hawk", and his guitar playing on the Jimi Hendrix number is a real treat.
