Emmylou Harris

Wrecking Ball

5-star songs - 1-star production

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (6/10)
This is a frustrating cd. Emmylou's selection of songs is just about perfect, and I'd love to hear her recut them with one of her previous bands (esp. the Nash Ramblers), but the Lanois wall-of-mud production buries every moment in the same vague sloshy sound (he's wrecked some Dylan records too). The worst example is "Goodbye": compare it to Steve Earle's original and you'll see how they totally drowned the song. Same story for Wrecking Ball, Orphan Girl, Hendrix song and Every Grain of Sand, etc. Emmylou's versions lose out to the originals every time, but it didn't have to be that way! If Emmylou asked my opinion, I'd recommend trying again with the same songs and a different producer.
