I was actually pretty disappointed with Enigma's latest album. SCREEN BEHIND THE MIRROR had the potential of being a great album, had Cretu, et.al., chosen to leave out the vocals. In my opinion, the vocals give the album almost a "cheesy" tinge. Had the album been purely a melange of electronic and sampled operatic music, SCREEN would've been a wonderful album as a whole to listen to. Don't get me wrong; there are a couple of very good tracks. Track 2, Push the Limit, does just that--it has a very surreal, film noir feel with an outstanding back beat. Unfortunately, Track 3 continues with an annoying female voice singing something pseudo-moralistic, something about the Gravity of Love. It would have been a better track had she been left out and Cretu embellished the operatic chorus, which is relegated as backup vocals for the woman's voice. Track 5, Modern Crusaders, is painful to listen to because of the man's singing--which is not that great, to say the least. Same is true for Silence Must Be Heard, Track 11; leave out the singing, and it would've been a fine track. Unfortunately, Enigma has fallen into the mainstream pit, and with the SCREEN, is trying to repeat the success they had with their hit "The Return to Innocence." By doing so, they're music suffers. Enigma's MCMXC.AD and Enigma 3: Le Roi Est Mort, Vive Le Roi! are far better albums than THE SCREEN BEHIND THE MIRROR.
