Eric Clapton

Blues

Good Review of Clapton's foundation

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (8/10)
From the time I first saw a "Clapton is God" scrawled on a subway wall in the 1960's until the present, Eric Clapton has been rightly recognized as one of the best guitarists rock has ever produced. These reissues invoke some of the power and talent which brought Clapton to the attention of the listening public. Still, as I have felt since his Derek and the Dominos days, Clapton seems willing to hide in his own shadow and these days provides flashes of brilliance where he used to shine like the mid-day sun. Other guitarists in rock ( Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page e.g) have proved much more consistent in delivery. In the world of white Blues, one would do well to listen to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Johnny Winter, and maybe even Kenny Wayne Shepherd to hear the ax work of which Clapton is certainly capable, but for whatever reason backs away from. That being said, I would recommend this album to someone seeking to understand Clapton's roots and hear a truly talented but now sadly understated guitarist.
