Me and Mr. Johnson: Eric's overdue tribute

Eric's love of Johnson's music is probably over chronicled. Why did it take so long for this tribute? His answer is that he's finally not afraid to do the project, that he has enough distance from Eric's youthful adulation and awe to meet the project with confidence. This collection is not a faithful purist recreation of Robert Johnson, but an amalgam of musical styles that a mature Clapton brings to each song. It is reminiscent of Peter Green with Nigel Watson & Splinter Group. Green et. al and Clapton approach Johnson's material with maturity, understatement, and a good reason to continue listening to their CDs all the way through, instead of shaking your head in disgust while quickly reaching for Robert's original versions. If Clapton wasn't famous, this CD would generate a buzz anyway. It's worth buying if you are a Clapton fan who shied away from his pop drivel, and worth buying if you are a blues fan. Also, try Green's "Hot Foot Powder" a Robert Johnson tribute that preceeded Clapton's by a couple of years.
