Album Of The Year

Album Of The Ear.

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (8/10)
This is a tiny bit dissapointing, but only because it came from the same band who brought us Angeldust (if you read my review on that album, mentally change that 4 to a 5 by the way). Although we still manage to get a little bit of r and b, trip hop, and Mr. Bungle style circus-metal, the genre hopping has been nipped in the bud, which may be a positive thing for you if you prefer their more commercial material, but for me it was just a bit of a letdown. Nonetheless, on the whole this is still a pretty solid set of slightly progressive alt-metal (the "funk" aspect of the band having been gradually toned down over the years), and while Mike Patton doesn't really get a chance to show his full vocal range here, he does very well, and the keyboards that were mostly missing on the previous album King For A Day... make a welcome return. Key tracks include the singles "Last Cup Of Sorrow" and "Ashes To Ashes", the almost trip-hop "Stripsearch", and the oddly beautiful "Helpless". I would definitely get either The Real Thing or Angeldust first, but this isn't a bad purchase at all.
