Faith no More

King for a Day, Fool for a Lifetime

The band's worst is still worth 3 stars

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (6/10)
Yep, I'm on the K4AD-F4AL-is-their-worst-CD side, but I still think that it is a worthwhile piece of music. I just think it pales in comparison to previous glories because their genre-bending feels forced at times, whereas the fusion of metal, rap and progressive on The Real Thing and Angel Dust was completely natural and seamless. This may result in having an extra Mr. Bungle member in Trey Spruance, but it seemed like at times they were either trying way too hard to be new, as on 'Cuckoo For Caca' and 'Star AD', and at other times they were trying too hard not to be like Mr. Bungle, as on 'Evidence' and 'Caralho Voador'. The result is an album that sounds like a diluted version of the two Mike-Patton bands. The best songs are the ones that resemble most like old Faith No More. These include 'Ricochet', 'King For A Day', 'What A Day' and 'Digging The Grave'. The only songs that succeed in finding new territory for the band are 'The Gentle Art Of Making Enemies', the insane 'Ugly In The Morning' the more prog-oriented 'The Last To Know', and the gospel-tinged 'Just A Man'. The weakest tracks are the ones that stray too far from the original formula. These include the dull 'Evidence', the grating 'Star AD' and the silly 'Cuckoo For Caca'. Overall though, Faith No More fans will enjoy it, if not to the same degree as their previous classics.
