Albums like SoaNM are why I don't listen to much death metal. (There are a lot people who don't consider Fear Factory "death metal", but I have to use the term to give readers a reference point.) This in my opinion is little more than poorly produced paint-by-numbers thrash metal with unoriginal lyrics about (dis)organized religion, military dehumanization, bad relationships and other like subjects. Imagine the ingredients of a stereotypical death metal album like repetitive speed riffing, non-existing bass line, double-bass drumming that sounds like a dull clicking, and Liquid Drano vocals. Put all that together and you got SoaNM. Just about all the songs sound alike with very little to break the monotony. There are is nothing musically striking except for Burton Bell's clean vocals to distinguish this album from the hundreds of unexciting bands that have oversaturated the death metal scene and made it harder for the truly talented bands to survive.
