Tango In The Night

Coming out of a five year hiatus, Fleetwood Mac bounced back into the charts over the strength of the hit singles "Big Love", "Seven Wonders", "Little Lies", and "Everywhere", taken off of their now timeless 1987 smash release "Tango In The Night". At this juncture the band's lineup is still intact and their songwriting, singing, instrument performance, and production, are at an all-time high, perhaps once or twice previously but never subsequently matched in their life span. In my opinion one could even draw parallels to "Def Leppard" and their "Hysteria" album from the same era in terms of the quality of the material put together on a single LP. Here while Lindsey Buckingham dominates throughout by writing/singing about half of the songs on the album and doing the production work, his underrated bandmate Christine McVie contributes some of the most wonderful numbers. Stevie Nicks's presense (eventhough she's apparently not in her top form) cannot be downplayed. One of my other personal favorite tracks is the truly uptempo rocker "Isn't It Midnight", which recently I found out was also released as a single off of the album back in the 80's. (In fact "Family Man" was also released as a single to make a total of six singles pulled from TITN!) In any regards, critial and commercial considerations aside, TITN epitomizes a whole era of my personal life by brining back the bittersweet memories of a defining past, as a 14-year-old during the Summer of 1988. This is all the more reason why this record is among one of my top 100 favorite albums from the 1980's.
