A great start

I was surprised on how awesome Dave Grohl was as a songwriter when the Foo Fighters first arrived in 1995. He already proved himself as an amazing drummer in Nirvana, but little did I know he was working on songs both during his time in Nirvana, and after Kurt Cobain's death. It's rare that a person can be so successful in one band, then switch instruments and form another amazing band with almost just as much success, and Grohl certainly did that.

Like his departed friend, Grohl also writes emotional, and melodic hooks, and still rocks hard as well. With a few exceptions, the Foo Fighters' debut is a solid one, and has some of their greatest songs: I'll Stick Around, Alone & Easy Target, Floaty, X-Static, and Exhausted. Though they would outdo themselves with subsequent releases (including the most recent One By One), this debut was the sign of the second coming of Dave Grohl, and the sign of another great band bursting onto the music scene.
