Foreigner

Very Best & Beyond

Most of the hits - for better or worse

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (6/10)
By and large American commercial radio was not always a pleasant place in the late 1970's. Arena rock, disco, and not much else.

Foreigner, was a big part of the former genre, which was also a genre that was generally short on innovation, and long on safe, manipulative, songs.

When compared to other "masters" of the genre, (REO Speedwagon, Styx, Journey etc.) Foreigner were downright bearable thanks to the fact that it lacked the nails on chalk board vocals of those bands various lead singers. Sure, a lot of the band's songs were forgettable, but occasionally they really came up with a winner. "Cold As Ice," "Long, Long Way From Home" (inexcusably not included here) were catchy hit singles while "I Want To Know What Love Is," recorded with the New Jersey Mass Choir remains a genuinely moving song.

So I guess you gotta take the bad with the good, and if you really want a collection of hits from the era this one beats similar collections by the aforementioned bands by quite a bit.
