Guess who's back!
It's 50 Cent...and this time, he's got his crew behind him!
By the end of 2003, 50 Cent was probably the hottest artist in the hiphop business, and here's the follow-up to his enormously successfull debut album "Get Rich or Die Tryin" (which by the way isn't his first, but his third album).
And on "Beg For Mercy", he continues this trend with 18 brand-new tracks, which I was very excited to hear. Having listened to "Get Rich or Die Tryin" a million times since I got it, I was very excited to hear what new great tracks 50 Cent had to come up with. I expected a lot of nice collaborations with great producers like Dr Dre as well as with others artists.
But when I listened through the whole CD, I was a bit disappointed. Is this all?
After the pretty lame intro, "G-Unit", the album starts with two stand-out tracks.
"Poppin Them Thangs", the second single off the album, blew me off. I played it at least 10 times before I jumped to the next track, which was "My Buddy". I luuuuuuuuuv this beat! It's a killer! And the refrain - "My buddy, my buddy, wherever I go he goes!". Both of these songs has a true "Gangsta sound" which I really like. The heavy piano beat on "Poppin Them Thangs" reminds me of the glory days of the gangsta rap, like N.W.A.
What follows on pretty much the rest of the album are just silly attempts of combining gangsta rap with more explicit lyrics than you could imagine with soft, pop beats like Lloyd Banks "Smile" (which is nearly identical to 50's hit "21 Questions"). The fast piano-driven "Groupie Love" and the love song "I wanna get to know ya" (with a refrain by Joe, another attempt to make radio-friendly pop out of gangsta rap) are listenable, but easily forgettable. If you want a good track with Joe playin the 5th member of "G-Unit", then try their new single "Ride With You" - it's much more memorable.
Then we have the tough "Beg For Mercy", which is another highlight of the album. The rest of the tracks are gangsta rap where 50 Cent and his crew mostly raps about f***ing girls and beating up their enemies. After 68 minutes, it's getting pretty boring.
Over all, this is a difficult album to review. I won't say it's bad - definitley not, but I was actually expecting more. This album feels like a low-budget project that was written and produced very fast, only to get some more money (so 50 Cent could get even more rich before he dies, which could be pretty soon if his beef with Ja Rule continues!).
The beats are only average, and the lyrics...well, I know that you can do better. After listening to this album, I start to like Lloyd Banks a lot more - here, we could see we got a talented rapper, who is (in my opinion) a lot better than his buddy 50 Cent. Banks is releasing a solo album, from which the first single "On Fire" is out now, and that one seems very promising.
My final word is that I think you should skip this album - "Get Rich or Die Tryin" is a lot better. Anyhow, an average album now doesn't mean that G-Unit has no future. Both the above-mentioned Lloyd Banks album and a solo album by Young Buck is coming this summer, with 50 Cent comin up with his 2nd entry in the winter. So we have a lot to look forward to. May be a new album by the whole crew will be released next year or so.
Get big or die tryin, 50!
