After talking to a few friends about the new cd, I found that there were clearly two groups that had formed in terms of opinion. One group listened to the cd once or twice through and declared that Garbage had sold out and 'gone pop', and either liked the music or hated it. Those that hated it cited SYM and SIG as the only two good songs on the CD. Then, there were those like me that listened a bit more closely to the music and never had a doubt that Garbage is still a through-and-through rock band. There is an unbelievable amount of variety on this disc, yet it all manages to still sound like true Garbage. Shirley's vocals are supreme, as always, and the sound has been pared down a bit, revealing the quartet's flair for making terse, efficient songs. It's like taking Garbage of old, adding some stylings of the 70's and 80's, and removing all the fluff that floats to the top. Though many may accuse it of being poppy refuse or an oversized tribute album to a bygone era, those that are able to step back and listen to the music will not be disappointed.
