*GASP* Garbage did the unthinkable and "went pop"! Whatever shall we do?! Okay, yes I'm being stupid. I don't know why people have such a big problem with pop. Automatically an artist is a sell-out if they switch their sound to something more poppish. Hm.
However, this was my first thought when I put Beautifulgarbage in my friend's CD player for the first time. Now I do listen to pop music but I've always been a fan of Garbage because they had their own sound and it *wasn't* pop.
Beautifulgarbage is definitely one of those albums that you have to really listen to a few times to grasp the changes in the band's sound, and actually appreciate it. And even learn to love it.
The classic sound of Garbage is prominent throughout the album, through not only some of the instrumentals, but obviously Shirley's voice is the distinct giveaway of "yeah, that's them all right." In my opinion, the song "Nobody Loves You" and "Shut Your Mouth" is the closest sounding to songs from the debut album. On the other hand, it's obvious 70s, 80s, and even a bit of 50s styles have influenced the band's sound, as evident on the tracks "Cherry Lips", "Parade", and "Can't Cry These Tears", respectively.
I could go into detail about each and every song on Beautifulgarbage, since they all have their own seperate influence and sound, but I'll skip it and just say it's an awesome album, probably Garbage's best yet. But if you're like me, then you'll have to spin it a few times to adjust to the shock of hearing a completely new and reinvented Garbage (with just a touch of old school).
