Undoubtedly this is not Garth Brooks strongest album. What is more important is that it is his strongest album in quite a few years. I was one who was suckered, willingly, into the Chris Gaines hype. Hearing Garth pumping out a few true pop melodies is what makes him...well...Garth. Yet when Mr. Brooks decides to return to his roots, he does it with a passion.
Foregoing the "Wrapped Up In You", obviously written for the radio, and the symbolic "Beer Run" with his idol George Jones, Brooks goes back to where it works, with the Irish pub song "Pushing Up Daisies" and the bluegrass "Don't Cross The River", both excellent offerings showing Brooks's versatility.
Also included is the 2000 hit "When You Come Back To Me Again". It is when Garth sings with passion when he truly excels, and no other song on the album shows this more than with "WYCBTMA".
All in all, Garth seems to be moving graciously into the "senior circuit" of country artists, paving the way for the likes of Chris Cagle, Mark Wills, and the ever-popular Tim McGraw. Soon, the names Jones, Cash, Nelson, and Brooks will all be synonymous with "classic" country
